The History and Legacy of Jackson Family Wines

Jackson Family Wines began as one man's bold dream and grew into one of America's most respected wine companies. Founded by Jess Jackson in the 1970s, the family-owned business revolutionized California Chardonnay and built a diverse portfolio of premium wine brands that celebrate terroir and craftsmanship.

From Lawyer to Vintner: The Jess Jackson Story

Jess Jackson was not born into the wine world. Born in 1930, he worked his way through college, served as a police officer, and built a successful career as a land-use attorney in San Francisco. In 1974, looking for a weekend retreat, he bought an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in Lake County, north of Napa Valley.

He converted the property to vineyards, planting Chardonnay and other varieties. At first, he sold grapes to local wineries. But in 1982, frustrated by low grape prices during a market glut, Jackson decided to make his own wine. That decision changed everything.

The Chardonnay That Changed America

Jackson's first release was the 1982 Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay. A happy accident—a slightly stuck fermentation left a touch of residual sugar—gave the wine a rich, approachable style that American consumers loved.

Priced affordably yet made with premium grapes, it quickly became the best-selling Chardonnay in America, a position it held for decades. This success put California Chardonnay on the map and proved that high-quality wine could be both delicious and accessible.

Growth Through Thoughtful Acquisitions

With profits from Kendall-Jackson, the company expanded thoughtfully. Jackson focused on estate vineyards in premier coastal regions where cool climates produce balanced, elegant wines. Over the years, Jackson Family Wines acquired or founded dozens of respected wine brands.

Here are some of the most notable brands in the portfolio:

A Lasting Family Legacy

After Jess Jackson's passing in 2011, his wife Barbara Banke took the helm as chairman. Their children—Julia, Katherine, and Christopher—are actively involved in the business, ensuring it remains family-owned and family-run.
